Mini-games have been a popular staple in the franchise since day 1. But don’t worry, you also get a point for every banana you collect… even when you fall out! So every time you retry a stage, you get more and more points from getting bananas each time. This is actually pre-unlocked in the Digital Deluxe Edition, but without that, you’re paying 20,000 points. One big example of the latter is the Golden Banana mode. Points are used in the Point Shop where you buy characters, costumes, and even modes. Some missions have you finishing under a certain time, finishing a stage below a fall out limit, and most often just beating the stage period, etc. The Point Shop, specifically the Character tab.ĭuring stages you earn points by completing missions in each given stage. And did I mention all the costumes you can acquire for the monkeys? From classic Sega vets like Classic Sonic and Classic Tails, but also Kiryu from Yakuza (from the same developer), but even guest stars as paid DLC which are Morgana from the Persona 5, Suezo from Monster Rancher (yes) and even Hello Kitty (also yes). The thing with this game is that not only does it have all the stages and missions from the aforementioned Super Monkey Ball games, but it has a lot of the mini-games from said games, and a whole host of accessibility options to customize your experience (including motion controls on Switch this time), AND you also get a bunch of other playable characters to boot. Think of it like those old-school tabletop wooden labyrinth things where you tilt the labyrinth to guide the marble to the hole. A thing to also consider is how it “works” see, you don’t move the monkey, you move the stage to guide the monkey. Along the way you can collect bananas to get some more points, while also tempting fate as a number will be on risky paths, you know the drill. This is basically a ball-rolling puzzle where you have to stay on the path without falling off and make it to the goal post. How did this turn out, at least to someone who never touched the original GameCube games? Well, let’s roll on and find out! So now we arrive at this game, which is actually a sort of bundled remake of Super Monkey Ball 1, 2, and Deluxe, all mashed together (so not in the Crash and Spyro arrangement, but closer to Tony Hawk I guess). Most of that wonderful soundtrack by Noisycroak was removed, no motion controls (not even on Switch), and a bizarrely different yellow and black interface, replacing that vivid, colorful one the original game had. Fast forward to the Switch and Sega actually had remastered that game… to less than optimal results. I found that to be super fun, colorful, pretty, and had an OUTSTANDING soundtrack. This is my first review of a Super Monkey Ball game, but not the first I played! Way back, I played and loved Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz on Wii, released on the system’s launch day.
